Our editorial criteria

A market lands in this roundup when it clears three bars: (1) it's about something happening in or to New York — a team, a race, a policy, a cultural moment; (2) there's enough liquidity on a regulated venue that the price is meaningful, not decorative; and (3) there's a news catalyst in the next 7–14 days that will move the line.

We don't rank by expected value or by our view of the price. We rank by relevance to a New York reader — how much you're already thinking about this event.

How to read an NYC event market

Three questions before you take anything seriously on the tape.

CheckWhat to look forWhy it matters
LiquidityRecent volume, tight bid-ask spread, deep bookThin markets can be mispriced or manipulated
Resolution sourceNamed official body or data providerAmbiguous resolution language is where surprises live
News flowUpcoming catalyst in the market windowPrices move on news; a quiet window means a stale price
Cross-venue checkCompare to another regulated venue if listedPersistent gaps flag one side's edge or one side's error

A reader's checklist before treating a market price as signal.

Sports

In New York the sports markets that draw the most interest follow the calendar: Knicks and Rangers from October to June, Yankees and Mets from spring through October, and Giants and Jets from September. The deepest contracts are usually game winners, series prices and championship futures on Kalshi, ProphetX and Polymarket.

To find this week's games, open the sports section of the platform and filter by team. Our NY baseball October guide shows how we read those boards.

Politics

City and state politics trade in cycles: primaries, general elections, budget deadlines in Albany and City Hall, and approval or reelection contracts for sitting officials. Our coverage of the 2025 mayor's race shows how a New York race looks on the board.

Between elections, the most active follow-up markets are approval and reelection contracts — see our Mamdani first-100-days piece. Check the market's resolution source before you trade: it should name an official body such as the NYC Board of Elections.

Culture

Culture markets cluster around fixed dates: the Tony Awards in June, the Met Gala on the first Monday in May, and awards season in winter. OG and Kalshi list many of them — see Broadway opening night markets.

These markets are often thin. Volume tends to spike on the day of the event and fade soon after, so check the bid-ask spread before reading much into a price.

Macro

Macro markets run on a published calendar: Federal Reserve meetings (eight a year), the monthly CPI inflation report and the monthly jobs report. Kalshi lists contracts on each; our Fed rate piece shows how to read them.

Check the official calendars — the Federal Reserve's FOMC calendar and the Bureau of Labor Statistics release schedule — to see which macro markets have a catalyst this week.

A caveat, and a reminder

This is editorial coverage: a guide to the kinds of markets New York readers usually find most relevant, and how to find the current ones. It's not a recommendation to trade any specific market, and nothing here should be read as investment or betting advice.
