Where things stand

  • The tournament is over. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium, which FIFA called New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament. Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute.
  • USA: out in the round of 16. The United States won Group D, beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 32 on July 1, then lost 4-1 to Belgium in Seattle on July 6.
  • Mexico: out in the round of 16. Mexico lost 3-2 to England in Mexico City on July 5. The USA and Mexico did not play each other at this World Cup.
  • Markets: every question about the 2026 tournament now has a known answer, so contracts tied to it settle under their written rules and no longer move with the news.
  • What settles next: the next big international tournament is the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, from June 24 to July 25, 2027. After that come the Olympic soccer tournaments in July 2028, with matches in New York, and the men's World Cup in 2030.
  • MetLife in 2027: we did not find a confirmed 2027 soccer match at MetLife Stadium in the sources we checked. The confirmed local soccer date is in Queens: New York City FC's new stadium, Etihad Park, is due to open on July 17, 2027.

What happened in the World Cup 2026 final at MetLife?

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time on Sunday, July 19, 2026. According to CBS News, substitute Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute, and Argentina played all of extra time with ten men after Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. It is Spain's second men's World Cup title; the first came in 2010.

ESPN's report describes a one-sided match: Spain had 20 shots to Argentina's two, and Argentina's first attempt of any kind came in the 115th minute. The Associated Press noted that Spain became the first country to hold the men's and women's World Cup titles at the same time.

On attendance, Sky Sports' match page lists 80,663, and the Associated Press described a crowd of about 80,000. We did not find the figure on a FIFA page we could open, so treat it as reported, not official.

Which World Cup 2026 matches were played at MetLife Stadium?

Eight: five group matches, one round-of-32 match, one round-of-16 match and the final. The results table above lists all of them.

The stadium is in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and is the home of the Giants and the Jets. During the tournament FIFA used the name New York New Jersey Stadium, because its rules do not allow sponsor names on venues. If you search for results under either name, you are looking at the same building.

Four teams played there twice: France, Norway, Brazil and Senegal. France won a group match and a round-of-32 match at MetLife. Norway won a group match there and then knocked out Brazil in the round of 16, with two late goals from Erling Haaland.

How did the USA's World Cup 2026 end?

In the round of 16. U.S. Soccer reported that the team finished first in Group D, which included Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye. In the round of 32 the USA beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on July 1, with goals from Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman, according to ESPN's match report. Balogun was sent off in that match.

Five days later, on July 6, the USA lost 4-1 to Belgium in Seattle. MLS's report lists Charles De Ketelaere (twice), Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku as Belgium's scorers and Tillman as the USA's.

None of the USA's matches was played at MetLife.

Did the USA play Mexico at the 2026 World Cup?

They did not. The two co-hosts were placed in different groups, and both lost in the round of 16 before their paths could cross. Mexico's tournament ended on July 5 with a 3-2 defeat to England in Mexico City, according to NBC's match report.

A contract on a match that depends on two teams both advancing is a question about something that may never be played. Read how the rules treat that case before trading one.

How did the markets do on the World Cup?

We do not publish market prices, so this section is about how the contracts work, not about what any platform showed on a given day.

How a tournament-winner contract settles. A contract asks one question, such as whether a named team will win the tournament. Once the final is over and the result is official, the contract on the champion pays $1 for each contract held and every other team's contract pays $0. Contracts on teams that were eliminated earlier had a known outcome from the day those teams went out.

How a match contract settles. The key detail is which result counts. Many soccer contracts settle on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, and others settle on which team advances. The final shows why this matters: it was 0-0 after 90 minutes and was decided in extra time. A contract on "Spain to win in regulation" and a contract on "Spain to lift the trophy" were different questions with different answers.

Example (made-up numbers, not a real market): a contract asking "Will Team A win the tournament?" is priced at $0.20. A buyer pays $0.20 per contract and receives $1 if Team A wins the tournament and nothing if it does not. The $0.20 price means traders, taken together, see roughly a 20-in-100 chance. If Team A wins its first knockout match and the price rises to $0.30, the buyer can sell then instead of waiting for the final.

What can a long tournament market teach a trader?

  • A price is an estimate, not a result. The 2026 tournament had 48 teams and one winner. Even a team that many people rate highly is more likely to go out than to win, and a low price mostly means "unlikely", not "cheap".
  • Knockout soccer is decided by small margins. The final turned on one goal in extra time after a red card. Brazil went out to two late goals. One match is a small sample.
  • Host status does not carry a team by itself. The USA and Mexico both played at home and both lost in the round of 16.
  • Long contracts tie up money. A tournament-winner contract bought before the first match is not decided for more than a month. You can sell earlier, but only at the price someone else will pay at that moment.
  • The rules decide, not the headline. Regulation time or extra time, abandoned matches, and the source used for settlement are all written into the contract.

Fees and taxes also affect what you keep. See our guide to how Kalshi works, the Kalshi and Polymarket US comparison and the New York tax guide.

How did fans get to MetLife during the World Cup?

Mostly by train and bus, and under special rules. According to 6sqft's report from May 2026, NJ Transit first set a $150 round-trip train fare for match days and then lowered it to $105. Train tickets were limited to 40,000 per match and had to be booked in advance by people holding match tickets. An official shuttle bus cost $80.

Those arrangements ended with the tournament. For Giants and Jets games the stadium is back to its normal name and normal travel options; our Giants and Jets guide covers the football side.

What comes after World Cup 2026 for New York soccer fans?

Four dates are worth knowing.

  • 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. Brazil hosts from June 24 to July 25, 2027, in eight cities: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador. It is the first Women's World Cup in Brazil.
  • Etihad Park. New York City FC says its stadium in Willets Point, Queens, will open on July 17, 2027, with room for about 25,000 fans.
  • 2028 Olympic soccer. LA28 named New York Stadium, which it describes as the future home of New York City FC, as one of the venues outside Los Angeles. The club says nine matches are assigned to it: men's and women's group matches between July 10 and July 17, 2028, and a men's quarterfinal on July 20. The gold-medal matches are at the Rose Bowl on July 28 (men) and July 29 (women).
  • 2030 men's World Cup. FIFA appointed Morocco, Portugal and Spain as hosts, with one centenary match each in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. Spain will be a host as defending champion.
