The short answer

Rangers and Islanders contracts can cover a single game, playoff qualification, the Metropolitan Division, the Eastern Conference or the Stanley Cup. Each price reflects one specific question and its settlement rule, not a guarantee about either team's season. In New York, the sports platforms we cover are available while a legal dispute is pending.

Where things stand

  • Rangers: The Rangers are 5-2-0. They lost their opener to Boston, beat Tampa Bay, Detroit, Utah and the Islanders, lost 3-1 in Washington on October 9, then beat Vancouver 6-2 at home on October 11. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin injured his right knee in the Washington game, and the Rangers announced on October 10 that he is out for the season. Dylan Garand has taken over in goal.
  • Islanders: The Islanders are 2-3-0. They lost 2-1 in Toronto, beat New Jersey 6-0 at home, lost 5-2 to the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on October 6, beat Chicago 4-1 at home on October 8, then lost 5-3 to Tampa Bay at home on October 10.
  • Early read on the Islanders: Their 6-0 win over New Jersey is a notable early result, and the 5-2 loss to the Rangers three days later pointed the other way.
  • Next: On Tuesday, October 13, the Rangers host Tampa Bay and the Islanders host Vancouver. On Thursday, October 15, the Rangers visit New Jersey and the Islanders visit Ottawa. A season-ending injury to a starting goaltender can change how player and team contracts settle, so read each contract's rules.

Which Rangers and Islanders prediction markets can appear?

Listings change by platform and date. When they are offered, New York hockey markets can include:

  • A single-game winner
  • Regular-season points or win thresholds
  • Metropolitan Division winner
  • Eastern Conference winner
  • Playoff qualification
  • Stanley Cup champion

The question matters more than the category label. A contract on making the playoffs is not the same as one on winning the division, and a single game settles only the contract tied to that game. A contract's price sits between $0 and $1 and shows what traders collectively imply about the stated outcome; our prediction markets vs. sports betting guide explains the format.

Hockey adds one detail worth checking: how a contract treats overtime and shootouts. Read the named event, the closing time, the settlement source and the rules for postponements before you trade.

Why does a Rangers-Islanders game count twice?

Both teams play in the Metropolitan Division. When they meet, one result moves two lines in the same standings, so it feeds into both teams' division and playoff contracts at once. That is different from a game against a team in another division, which changes only one of them.

A rivalry result still settles only the game contract. For season-long contracts it is one input among many, and the division has other teams whose results count just as much.

How did the Rangers change their roster?

The Rangers came into the 2026-27 season after a substantial retool. The NHL's team reset lists Pavel Dorofeyev, Sean Durzi, Marcus Pettersson, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Joonas Korpisalo among the key arrivals.

Dorofeyev had 37 goals and 64 points in 82 games for Vegas last season before the Rangers acquired him by trade. Durzi and Pettersson are expected to form a new second defense pair, and Korpisalo is expected to compete with Dylan Garand for the backup role behind Igor Shesterkin.

Familiar names left as well. Vincent Trocheck was traded to the Utah Mammoth in the deal that brought Durzi, and Jonathan Quick retired after last season.

That much turnover is real information for a market, but it does not automatically mean improvement. Results show over time how the pieces fit together, and a season-long contract asks about the whole schedule, not the first few weeks.

What changed for the Islanders?

The Islanders added forward Matias Maccelli and goaltender Vitek Vanecek, both on one-year contracts, according to the NHL's team reset. Maccelli had 14 goals and 25 assists, 39 points, in 71 games for Toronto last season.

The bigger change is who left. Longtime captain Anders Lee signed with Utah after 14 seasons and 923 games with the Islanders. The NHL's reset also highlighted younger players who could take larger roles, including Victor Eklund and Isaiah George.

The Islanders finished last season 43-34-5, sixth in the Metropolitan Division, and missed the playoffs. A handful of games cannot answer whether the offseason changes are enough to reverse last season's finish, which is the question a playoff qualification contract actually asks.

How should traders read early-season NHL prices?

Start by separating three things:

  1. The event outcome: what happened on the ice.
  2. The settlement criteria: what the contract rules say will produce Yes or No.
  3. The trader's inference: what someone thinks the result means for the rest of the season.

The first two can be verified. The third is an opinion.

It also helps to read an NHL record correctly. It has three numbers: wins, regulation losses, and overtime or shootout losses. Playoff places are decided on points, so two teams with the same number of wins can sit in different positions. An early winning record can lift a playoff or Stanley Cup price, but the move can just as easily reflect injuries, schedule strength, goaltending or news from elsewhere in the division.
