Queens — Group Stage HQ at the USTA

The marquee event — the Rink at Rock Center converted into a temporary pitch, knockout-round matches projected over the plaza, a tribute installation to the eight World Cup–winning nations, and the free FIFA Museum exhibition Legacies of Champions (Jules Rimet Trophy, jerseys from all 48 participating nations). This is where the city's energy will concentrate for the semis and the July 19 final.

Best soccer bars in NYC for the World Cup

Fan zones are free and family-friendly. Soccer bars are the other tradition — older, louder, and the room where this city has watched every World Cup since cable existed. A working borough-by-borough shortlist:

Manhattan

• —Smithfield Hall (Midtown, 138 W 25th St) — the city's defining big-screen soccer hall. Forty-plus TVs, two floors, opens early for European kickoff times. Reserve a table for marquee matches.

Brooklyn

Queens

The Bronx & Staten Island

Outside the official Bronx Fan Zone weekend, the borough watches at neighborhood pubs along Arthur Avenue and in Riverdale. On Staten Island, the local bars in St. George and Stapleton handle big matches — pair them with a fan-zone day at SIUH Community Park.

Beyond the official fan zones, expect the usual NYC summer-screening venues to add World Cup nights — Bryant Park, Pier 17 at the Seaport, and various Brooklyn waterfront parks have all hosted FIFA broadcasts in past tournaments. • —Opening NYNJ match at MetLife — mid-June. The Queens HQ and Brooklyn Bridge Park fan zones will both be loud.
